In this presentation, we will look at how we experience time; how we have measured time and how we celebrate time. We begin with Dali's much debated painting, The Persistence of Memory. Whatever his original interpretation, it illustrates very well how time 'melts' during the liturgy and we are taken up into something far bigger than we ourselves; into liturgical time, which runs according to the cosmic rhythms of the sea and the sky, in the background. During the liturgy, time collapses into eternity, as these watches are collapsing. Time loses its limitations during the liturgy and becomes one with its fullness - so when we celebrate the Eucharist, we are at once present with Christ and the disciples in the upper room, we are present in our own church and we are sharing in the eschatological banquet at the end of time.
